New Hampshire leads our rankings for retirees with a score of 68.0 out of 100. Close behind are Vermont (68.0) and Maine (66.6). These top-ranked states consistently score well across the categories that matter most to retirees: health, fiscal health, affordability.

Key Findings

The gap between the #1 and #50 state is 32.4 points β€” a substantial difference that translates to real quality-of-life differences. The median state scores 52.4/100, meaning the top half of states cluster in the 52-68 range.

For retirees, the most important category is Fiscal Health (20% weight), followed by Health (20%) and Affordability (18%). States that score above 70 in these top categories almost always place in the top 15.

Regional Patterns

For retirees, Northeastern states lead with an average persona score of 58.4, followed by the Midwest (56.1), West (53.5), and South (45.8).

Surprise Rankings
